The History of Hope Fund
The Hope Fund was named in honor of Hope, a beautiful black retriever cross who was rescued from the county shelter in Spokane. Hope had been overlooked by potential adopters because she had a severe limp. Her time was running out and she was scheduled to be humanely killed the day after Christmas in 2001. Rescue volunteers issued pleas to find someone to rescue her because of her sweet temperament. WCHS answered the call for help, and Hope was transferred to Pullman, where radiographs revealed a dislocated hip with a fracture of the femur head. With surgery, she would regain an excellent quality of life.
WCHS immediately contacted rescue groups, animal welfare agencies, and private individuals to raise funds for Hope's surgery. Within hours, enough money had been pledged from individuals locally, and across the state, to pay for her care. Hope successfully recovered and was adopted by a wonderful family in Moscow, Idaho. The original donations exceeded the cost of Hope's care, so The Hope Fund was established in her name to save other animals in need.
About Hope Fund
The Hope Fund is a compassion fund administered by the Whitman County Humane Society. The fund was determined by the WCHS Board of Directors to be consistent with the goals and mission of WCHS. The Hope Fund is designated for veterinary care of injured shelter (un-owned) animals in the Pacific Northwest, or approved by the selection committee. Such care is above and beyond the authorized expenditure limit established by the WCHS Board of Directors for per animal shelter care. The Hope Fund provides necessary veterinary care (including surgery), foster care and rehabilitation for treated animals until an adoptive home is found.
The fund is completely self- sustaining by donations from the public. No funds used for Hope Fund cases are to be diverted from the WCHS general fund or other WCHS corporate resources. The Hope Fund is maintained in a separate bank account.
