Pet Food Bank

Sometimes, a little extra help can make a big difference. Our Pet Food Bank, which is stocked by community donations, provides supplemental pet food and cat litter to local pet owners who need a helping hand.

Pet Food Bank supplies will be available on the third Thursday of every month from 1–4:30 PM to those who live in Whitman County.

During good weather, distribution will take place outside of the Cat Building. During the winter, we will move inside the Cat Building. No appointment is needed. Just stop by during the distribution hours and check in at the table when you arrive.

Households can receive up to one large bag of dog food, one large bag of cat food, and one gallon-sized bag of cat litter, depending on the pets in the household. Supplies are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Emergency Pet Food Assistance

We know that sometimes you can't wait for the next monthly distribution. For unexpected or urgent situations, we offer limited Emergency Pet Food Assistance outside of our regular distribution schedule.

If you need emergency assistance, you will be asked to complete an Emergency Pet Food Assistance Form. If you are eligible, you will receive up to two gallon-sized bags of pet food.

Emergency assistance is limited to two uses per household per calendar year.

  • Starting October 1, 2026, the WCHS Pet Food Bank will be available on the third Thursday of every month from 1:00–4:30 PM. The Food Bank is not available during regular shelter hours except on limited emergency situations.

  • The success of the Pet Food Bank relies on generous community and business donations. We encourage recipients to give back whenever possible to help other pets and families in need.

    We gladly accept:

    • New or opened bags of dry food (with visible expiration dates).

    • Canned or dry food for cats or dogs.

    By donating, you're making a direct impact on pets in your community.  Donations can left outside of the dog building at any time.

  • We provide dog food and cat food as supplies are available. Cat litter is also occasionally available depending on donations.

  • No, our team will bring out whats available. Because our Pet Food Bank is entirely donation-based, the food and supplies we have available depend on what has been donated to us. We cannot guarantee a specific brand, formula, or type of food.

    We will always take your pet's dietary needs into consideration when determining what food may be appropriate, but the options available will depend on our current supply.

  • When weather allows, the Food Bank will be located outside the Cat Building. During bad weather and throughout the winter, the Food Bank will be moved inside the Cat Building.

  • You simply need to be a pet owner in need who lives in Whitman County that is in need. The Food Bank is intended to provide supplemental assistance to households that are having difficulty providing food and basic supplies for their pets.

  • We understand that unexpected situations happen. If you are experiencing an urgent need and cannot wait until the next scheduled distribution, you may request Emergency Pet Food Assistance twice a calendar year.

    Emergency assistance is available for unexpected or urgent situations when you cannot wait until the next monthly Food Bank distribution.

  • We made this change to help ensure the Pet Food Bank remains a fair and sustainable resource for everyone in our community who needs help feeding their pets. We have seen an increase in people accessing the Food Bank outside of regular distribution times, and some households were using the resource more frequently than intended, leaving few resources for others. This made it difficult to ensure that our donated food and supplies were available to as many households in need as possible.

    Moving the Food Bank to one dedicated day each month gives us a more consistent process for distributing available resources and helps us make sure the Food Bank can continue serving the community long-term.
