Week Two – Learning About the World Around Them
At the two week mark, kittens begin to become more aware of their surroundings. Their eyes will be fully open and their ears will begin to unfold. All kittens are born with blue eyes and will change color as they get a bit older. Kittens at this stage will begin to have their incisor teeth break through. Two-week-old kittens will still be completely reliant on mom for warmth, protection, and food. Their mom or caregiver will still have to stimulate them to urinate and defecate. As their motor skills develop further, they will begin to walk instead of scoot around and will play with their littermates, but they will still spend most of their time sleeping. They will only need to be fed about every 4 hours now, so mom may spend longer amounts of time outside of her nest. It is a good idea to begin handling kittens at this age if momma cat lets you. We want to make sure they associate people with good, positive things at an early age so they become better house pets.
