Sophie
Sophie had a hard life. Her rear leg was broken. It was an old break and required extensive orthopedic surgery to repair and heal. But, surgery must wait. Sophie couldn't undergo anesthetic until her pups were born and weaned. Fitted with a splint, she was placed for foster care with us.
When the pups were 3 weeks old, Sophie was diagnosed with a severe uterine infection. Her entire abdominal cavity was a mess. Despite heroic measures by veterinary surgeons, we lost Sophie. Her passing hit all who knew her like a ton of bricks. Sophie had such a spirit despite her tough life. She was kind to other animals and children. My nine-year-old daughter commented that Sophie reminded her of a grandma. Kind and sweet, giving unconditional love. She would have made some special family a wonderful pet.
Sophie left a legacy of seven sweet puppies. Sadly, they won't learn the ways of being a dog from their attentive mother. We all miss Sophie, but are so thankful she touched our lives and our hearts. True to her breed she loved people. All people. Her favorite place was by your side, a companion and faithful friend. She will never be forgotten.
