I had just moved to Pullman from across the continent after closing down my family home of 33 years. I had just been notified that the person I had loved the very most had committed suicide, and then September 11 happened the next day and my grief deepened. I truly doubted my ability to love again. Christmas meant nothing to me as I had no one to share it with.
All I wanted from Santa was a kitten. Rescue workers from WCHS showed up on December 22 with this little three-legged, skinny kitten and said "Merry Christmas, Karen." Tears filled my eyes and love flooded my heart. I took the kitten and stuck her under my sweater so she could feel my heart beat. I immediately named her Empress Harly Berry. I knew we were kindred souls. Harly is a lovely and fierce, feisty and friendly individual as am I. I was happy to discover that, yes, I am still capable of love for it was love at first sight.
