THE NAMESAKE of The Hope Fund is a beautiful young adult retriever cross who was rescued from the county shelter in Spokane. Hope had been overlooked by potential adopters because she had a severe limp. Her time was running out and she was scheduled to be humanely killed the day after Christmas, 2001. Rescue volunteers issued pleas to find someone to rescue her because of her sweet temperament. WCHS answered the call for help, and Hope was transferred to Pullman, where she was thoroughly evaluated. Radiographs revealed a dislocated hip with a fracture of the head of the femur. With surgery, she would regain an excellent quality of life.

Hope fund guidelines (18 kb pdf download)WCHS immediately contacted rescue groups, animal welfare agencies and private individuals to raise funds for Hope's surgery. Within hours, enough money had been pledged from individuals locally and across the state to pay for her care. Hope successfully recovered and was adopted to a wonderful home in Moscow, Idaho. The original donations exceeded the cost of Hope's care, so The Hope Fund was established in her name to save other animals in need.
Holly was a lovely Belgian shepherd cross who had been hit by a car and left to die by the side of a road. Her front leg was shattered into 21 pieces. With assistance from The Hope Fund, she underwent reconstructive surgery and recovered beautifully. Holly was adopted to a family in Western Washington where she is a much-beloved pet. Holly touched many people involved in her rescue because of her gentle and trusting nature.
The most famous of The Hope Fund rescues is "Empress" Harly, who resides most days at the Square One Antique Mall in downtown Pullman. Little Harly is a beautiful black and white cat who has only three legs and was scheduled to be humanely killed at the Spokane shelter right before Christmas, 2001. Harly required surgery to remove the stump of her leg that had become badly infected. Harly was adopted by Karen Rogers, manager of Square One. Harly greets customers and makes herself at home at the mall. She is the "postergirl" for The Hope Fund.
