Volunteers

The Whitman County Humane Society needs more than contributions, we need volunteers. The money obtained during our membership and fundraising activities meets the needs for paying the bills. However, there is much work to be done to caring for animals - feeding, grooming, vaccinations, exercising, and more. With only two full time staff at the shelter and one in the office, we need volunteers to help get the work done. There are many ways to volunteer. You can volunteer your time, your supplies, and, of course, your spare change. Remember - it's all about helping the animals.

Volunteer of the Year

Yan Chak Chong, Volunteer of the Year, is a person who makes a difference in the lives of our animals. He has donated over 400 hours of service to the care of our animals since January. He donated over 100 hours in the month of September! Teresa Asman, shelter manager, calls Yan Chak Chong an invaluable asset to her. In the photograph below, Teresa is presenting an award plaque to him in appreciation for all of his hours of service.

Here are some suggestions on how you can help too:

  • Work : There is always work to be done. Contact either the office or the shelter to schedule your time to help, get information on the best way to come dressed, and/or any special materials you should bring with you (gloves, shovel, etc.).
  • Supplies : Even if you don't have $10 to spend, you might have some cleaning supplies, old towels, animal treats, etc. that you can drop off at the shelter. Call the Shelter if you think you might have something we could use.
  • Foster or Adopt an Animal : Nothing helps more than to give a needy pet a new home - even if just for a short time to help alleviate the crowding and work at the shelter. Please call the Shelter staff to discuss.

WCHS Member donates mini-van for Shelter use!

Bill Sayre, one of the members of our Society woke up one day and said to himself, 'What am I gonna do with my old mini-van. I know, I'll donate to the Humane Society for use at their shelter.' And, so he did. Pictured here, we see Greg Wust, WCHS President taking ownership of our new van. Thank you Bill!!!!
