S.N.A.P. Information

S.N.A.P. stands for Spay and Neutering Assistance Program

1/15/07 : WCHS Increases Assistance to Spay or Neuter Needy Pets!

The Whitman County Humane Society has implemented changes to its county-wide spay and neuter program also known as "SNAP" to make it more accessible and useful to individuals in need of veterinary services who cannot otherwise afford to spay and neuter their companion animals. The application process been streamlined to make it easier for people to qualify but remains only eligible to Whitman County residents. In addition, a greater amount of the total cost of the procedure will now be covered with SNAP funds. WCHS will provide vouchers to participating veterinarians for payment of 75 percent of the surgical procedure up to a maximum of $50.00.

SNAP provides surgery cost assistance to low-income responsible pet owners in Whitman County for the spaying and/or neutering of their dogs and/or cats. The Whitman County Humane Society is dedicated to promoting spaying and neutering of dogs and cats to reduce the over-population of companion animals. Financial support for the SNAP program is generated through private donations and certain fundraising efforts where the revenue is earmarked for the SNAP program. No general operating funds are used to support the SNAP program.

The Humane Society firmly believes that reducing the population of kittens and puppies in our county will ultimately reduce the number of stray, abandoned, and unwanted animals. "We hope these changes to the SNAP program will provide greater assistance to people who love animals, but who need help with spay or neuter costs," says Colleen Harrington, President of WCHS Board of Directors, "In addition, we hope creating a more effective program will encourage people who want to help to donate funds to the SNAP program."

If you or someone you know has not yet had their animal spayed or neutered due to financial constraints, please contact WCHS' shelter at 509-332-3422 or the administrative offices at 509-332-2246 to see if we can help.
